Summary
Dan Rutherford was appointed to be the first Gregory Professor of Applied Mathematics at St Andrews in 1964.

In spite of his title, he was primarily a pure mathematician with an interest in algebra.

Biography

Daniel Rutherford was known to his friends and colleagues as Dan. He attended Perth Academy, completing his studies there in 1924.

    • He was then an undergraduate at St Andrews University receiving his B.Sc. in 1927, his M.A. in 1928, and being awarded First Class Honours in mathematics in 1929. Turnbull advised him to undertake research in Amsterdam under Roland Weitzenböck's supervision, and he obtained a doctorate from there with a thesis on modular invariants.

    It was an outstanding piece of work done under difficult circumstances since Rutherford knew no Dutch when he arrived in Amsterdam. His thesis appears as the Cambridge Tract Modular Invariants
