    Local metal singer, 'hounded by his demons,' dies at 47

    Known affectionately as "Midnight," John Patrick McDonald Jr., the original frontman for Sarasota progressive metal band Crimson Glory, died Wednesday morning at the age of 47.

    True to his name, McDonald went for long stretches outside the spotlight.

    He was in the midst of finishing a solo musical project when his long battle with alcoholism took its toll on his body.

    A public memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

    Saturday at Siesta Public Beach.

    To bandmates and devout fans, he was a visionary.

    "He was not always understood, but his talents were undeniable and transcended far beyond the bounds of our weaker imaginations," the band said in a statement.

    "As is the case with all truly great artists, Midnight was hounded by his demons."

    McDonald, a Sarasota native, helped lead Crimson Glory to international stardom in the late 1980s. He and Jon Drenning (lead guitar), Ben Jackson (guitar), Jeff Lords (bass) and Dana
