The oldest of five siblings, he grew up in the North End of Boston, attended public school, and graduated from Harvard College. In 1934 he received a degree in medicine from Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin. Dr. Spotnitz continued his medical studies at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, earning a Medical Science degree in neurology in 1939; he was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1941.
